This is an exclusive audio interview done with a leading expert on ADHD with the transcripts that explains:

That’s only taking into the account the monetary cost. What about the harmful physical, psychological and mental side effects that have the potential to do irreparable harm to your child’s body and psyche…..harm that you are paying through the nose for.

Esther has this to say about ADD: “Do you know that a big percentage of children that are diagnosed with ADD are just children that are intelligent and fast-learning , children who find it hard to sit still, while they are completely bored?”

You can turn your child from a problem into a protogread more

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is an increasing problem among children. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual on Mental Disorders or DSM is considered as a bible to diagnose the disorder. The manual is used extensively by American pediatrics to find out the presence of this disorder. People have raised eyebrows when it comes to the diagnostic methods mentioned in the manual because they are based on a set of questions and not on clinical tests. Many experts now believe that these methods are highly subjective and often lead to an under or over diagnosis.

ADHD manifests itself through a lot of symptoms like allergies, food intolerance, hearing difficulties, learning problems etc. These symptoms are also associated with other disorders too, and their presence does not necessarily mean that the child is going through ADHD. That is why it is very important to confirm that the child is showing symptoms of ADHD only. A number of physical and psychological tests are conducted in order to rule out other possibilities before an occurrence of ADHD is confirmed.

Once ADHD is confirmed, the child undergoes neurological tests which often involve the parents too. Questionnaires form an integral part of this exercise. Parents are asked different questions to collect information on different things associated with the disorder. The questions basically revolve around the frequency of symptoms and duration of occurrence. The treatment includes psychostimulants which are banned for children below 4 years of age. Unfortunately, many doctors ignore the ban and treat children below the permissible age with these stimulants. This is actually illegal, and should not be promoted.

Experts, while screening the disorder, also see the child’s behavior in different situations. In order to find the behavior pattern during school hours, teachers are often called for an interview. The questionnaire designed for them focuses on the child’s responses in his or her school. Sufficient information is gathered from the teachers to get an idea about the learning abilities of the child. Usually, learning abilities are hampered by ADHD. In order to reduce subjectivity to the minimum, experts have emphasized on using direct and relevant questions only. No matter what techniques are used to determine a case of ADHD, it is difficult to get a precise result, and more often it is left to the judgment of the experts carrying out the test.

Some experts totally rely on psychostimulants for the treatment of ADHD, but many of them are now shifting to behavioral therapy. The best results are achieved with a combination of these two. Psychostimulants are usually habit forming, and a child using them can get addicted to these medicines. They also have some side effects like loss of sleep and appetite. Due to all these side effects, parents and doctors are looking for better methods to treat ADHD.

ADHD is a sensitive issue, and it should be dealt with utmost care. One needs to verify the authenticity of the doctors, tests and medications before starting any form of treatment.

Treatment of people with ADHD

Common understanding

Treatment begins with having the family and network understand that it is a neurophysiology disorder and not a naughty or rude child. Guilt and resignation minimized with parents, which in turn can give their best. It is important that the network, such as teachers and grandparents, taken in teaching and dissemination of study. If it is an adult who is diagnosed with ADHD, it is similarly important for families, workplaces and networks to become informed and gain an understanding of what it is all about and how the person can be supported.

Advice / guidance and support.

Home, school, institution, workplace and recreational measures are advised and coached in how the person must be treated. The key is to create a predictable and structured life. By incorporating good work strategies and create a shielded workplace. The person with ADHD need frequent breaks and short learning modules. The model can be applied to most situations, the person is in. The families involved can often significant benefit from meeting others with similar families and relatives.

Medicine

Medical treatment is a specialist task and is recommended in severe cases of ADHD. It is mainly the so-called central stimulant drugs (with the active ingredient methylphenidate) used. The drug increases the attention unit in the central nervous system and increases the activity in the frontal lobes. The latter has the effect that the person becomes better able to concentrate, focus his thoughts, improves his or hers ability to problem-solving and are better able to control his or hers impulses. Today we have a number of products available, many longer acting. The short acting only works for three to four hours, but there are now types that works 8-10 hours. There is a single product on the market (with the active ingredient atomoxetine, which act through other brain chemicals, which can only be taken once a day. The latter type of medication is recommended if the child also has anxiety or depression, and in some cases if child’s tics.

Social work

Children with ADHD and their families can get help from local social services in which they assigned a caseworker in specialized support group. This means taking a position on whether the child or family needs special assistance measures. Very difficult children may depend on that one parent is present to a greater extent than their work permits.

In many cases it is more appropriate to support the child in daycare, school or after-school center, where their social skills can be better developed. In this case, may seek additional educational support hours, or the child searched for schooling / institution with specific resources in the area. One can also propose relief for the family at home (childcare, cleaning, etc.) or search for a respite family.

Adults with ADHD may also need help and support. It is recommended if there are special needs to seek out social services in the municipality and inquire about the possibilities. ADHD in adults has gained more attention last year, but there are still professionals (doctors, social workers and others) who do not know the condition.

Future prospects?

ADHD is a chronic condition which is beyond childhood and into adulthood. Many find a way to compensate for his problems, while others have great difficulty with concentration, inner turmoil, restlessness and poor occupational and social functioning throughout life. Studies suggest that the prognosis depends on whether the child and later the young can be kept in a proper socialization. All sorts of dangers lurking in impulsive people. Poor adaptation to the education and labor, abuse and crime are frequent in this group. There is an excess risk of psychiatric disorder as depression and personality disorders in later life.

The young person with ADHD may need a special approach to education and employment. It is important that education and rehabilitation system to know the problems people with ADHD have and build a network of workplaces where the work can be tested in a protected environment. With a little more patience and space for youths and adults with ADHD they can represent a large labor force and dynamic resource in the community.

How do ADHD show itself?

The person can not sustain attention in tasks (or play).

The person has difficulty concentrating for more than a few minutes.

The person may not organize the work or activities.

The person is easily distracted by external stimuli.

The person has restless hands or feet.

The person has extreme motor activity that does not let themselves be governed. During puberty and in adults is the outer turmoil often replaced by a single restlessness.

The person has very noisy behavior.

The person is impulsive. Answer often questions before they are finished asked. Can not wait for his turn. Pushes often to get through. Have little or no situational awareness (empathy).

Symptoms are present at a level that is much more pronounced than that of peers, or people with the same developmental age.

What are the danger signals?

The most severely affected children have obvious symptoms, which are detected as early as kindergarten age, but others show sure signs of disturbance around the school. The turmoil and difficulties in playing that requires rules are danger signs as parents, educators and teachers must be aware of. Children often learn not from their mistakes. Many have a decreased need for sleep or a disturbed sleep with trouble falling asleep and more awakenings during the night. Most parents can usually tell whether children already from infant was difficult to regulate and had problems establishing permanent eating and sleeping rhythms.

What can you do?

As parents of a child with ADHD it is important to establish regularity in daily life. They should be evident, clear and consistent in its demands on the child and create as simple a life as possible. You have to remove distractions from everyday life, and when you have to give a message, you must apply directly to the child, be precise in its message and ensure that you have eye contact. It is important to establish cooperation with school and after-school, so everyone working in the same direction.

How is the disease diagnosed?

The doctor collects information on child development and current symptoms and their course. Includes information on pregnancy and parturition, the presence of similar symptoms in the immediate family and the child’s behavior now and earlier in the contexts in which it occurs in. Carry out a physical examination with emphasis on motor skills, coordination and the presence of other neurological diseases (epilepsy, tics, etc.). Concentration Ability and maturity assessed and a psychological intelligence investigation of the child should be considered. If there is suspicion of other mental problems, or if the case of moderate to severe ADHD who require treatment with medication, a child and adolescent psychiatrist involved. In child and youth psychiatrist deepened medical history, supplemented with additional tests and observations, and an assessment of the severity of core symptoms.

What is ADHD?

Disruption of attention and activity, or ADHD (attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder) is a neuropsychiatric disorder. The disturbance is best known in children, but continues to cause problems into adulthood in more than half. ADHD occurs in all degrees of difficulty and with a smooth transition to normal.
Disruption of attention, activity and impulsivity must be present before seven years of age and must have lasted at least six months. In addition, difficulties may be present in all the contexts in which the person is part of (school, home and leisure institution) before there can be talk about ADHD. Danish and foreign studies have found that ADHD occurs in a significant way from two to four percent of all children. Boys are affected four to five times more frequently than girls.

Often there other problems such as sleep disorders, learning disabilities, motor difficulties, conduct disorder, pervasive developmental disorder anxiety or depression.

What causes ADHD?

When you have ADHD, there are mistakes in the brain’s functions. This may be because one or more of the following:

Succession (60-80 percent of the variation is thought to be due to inheritance)

Adverse impacts during pregnancy (alcohol, tobacco and infections).

Very small or preterm infants.

Brain Damage in the first year of life.

We have not yet mapped in detail what brain changes underlying disorder, but preliminary studies suggest that there is disruption of the function in particular three areas of the brain:

In one area at the base of the brain (brainstem and the most primitive parts of the brain), which among other wakefulness is regulated by activating neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine. It is believed that the brains of people with ADHD acts as’ a tired brain. ” Awake unit is reduced.

The brain’s frontal lobes (frontal lobes) to control the brain regulates impulses and is responsible for planning and overview (executive functions). The reduced activity in the frontal lobes results in decreased ability to inhibit impulses, and to give an overview.

In an area behind the brain (cerebellum), where signal to noise ratio is controlled and regulated. There are theories that the brain is usually able to sort stimuli or distinguish ‘signal’ and ‘noise’. The ability is affected in individuals with ADHD.

There are also theories promote a different biological response to stress.

At this stage they learn to manage the signs and symptoms well enough to achieve success as if normal. You’ll discover that treatment and management is a process of discovery that needs to occur because the doctor must find out what medication is best as well as the best dosage for your child. Dosage management is the best way to minimize the side effects of many first line prescription treatments.

Medical treatment for ADHD generally works well for a high percentage of children. About 80% of children put on medical treatment for ADHD do respond well to it. The point is that if a child does not respond to one particular medication, or if there are side effects, then there are other medications that can be tried. It is also possible that there are other issues or conditions that may eventually preclude the existence of ADHD. However, if your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, there is a defined process that it is necessary to follow.

The inquiry of dosage with a range of stimulant regimens for ADHD, there is more than one type utilized for medicating, is an area that calls for your physician to make occasional and needed changes. The two main trepidations are a dosage that is too elevated, and in some occurrences a child might be strangely sensitive to a certain stimulant. There is no approach for prophesying these forms with any ADHD child. But your doctor will always start low dose and work up. There are particular side effects that are different from the typical such as the appearance of the child to be somewhat bored. If you should take note of anything odd or rather different in your child, then the most excellent thing to do is to call the supervising doctor.

The diagnosis, evaluation, and beginning of treatment are probably the most frustrating and delicate time for your ADHD child. Knowing that each child is unique and must have a special treatment plan created can be helpful. Remaining positive and monitoring your child’s progress is the key. Then your doctor can make appropriate changes as deemed necessary. You should also talk to your doctor about what you can do at home to help manage your child’s ADHD.

Successfully treating ADHD in children requires the efforts of all involved. This means the parents, doctors, and behavior therapists are all used to minimize and manage the symptoms of ADHD. If you have a child with ADHD, they need to be professionally diagnosed and a treatment plan based on the behaviors of your child. Many children and adults are able to manage the symptoms of their ADHD. Discovering what works best for your child appears to be the initial hurdle. Parents of ADHD children will need to remain as patient as possible throughout the process. Here are several approaches used in treating ADHD in children.

Statistics show that 70% of children with ADHD will exhibit symptoms into adolescent years. The fact is that many of these kids can manage the symptoms and be as successful as an average child. Treatment and management of this disorder is simply a process of discovering what works and what doesn’t for your child. There are of course side effects to some of these treatment options which are usually rectified with dosage management.

There are certain milestones and goals put in place when treatment and a course of symptom management has begun. To some degree, these are not always successful, unfortunately. What frequently happens if this occurs is your child will be reevaluated to confirm the diagnosis of ADHD.

This does not, however, mean that an incorrect diagnosis was made; this is just standard operating procedure. The doctor can also consider an alternate medication and assess other factors such as how well the original treatment plan was followed.

If the child fails to respond favorably after a maximum of three medication attempts the AAP considers this treatment a failure. A reevaluation is necessary at this point. You may want a second opinion. There may be another reason for your child’s behavior that has yet to be diagnosed. Some of the potential issues could include bipolar problems, learning disabilities and/or depression.

Once you have a diagnosis of ADHD, you will need to work with your doctor to determine the course of treatment. In most cases, you will need to try several medications to find the best one.
